Croatia Biograd na Moru Travel Tourism Guide - This Adriatic sea town is one of Croatia's best established tourist cities. At the turn of the twentieth century, Biograd na Moru became a favorite for tourists and had a major hotel built in 1935.

On a well protected peninsula in the central portion of the Adriatic, this city is ideal for the low key tourist. Small enough to keep the country town feeling, but large enough to cater to the traveler's needs.

Modern marinas serve this sea port town, making it a perfect stop for the ocean going traveler who wants to get out of way but still enjoy the wonder of the Adriatic sea.
Marina Kornati is located at the exact center of the Adriatic Coast of Croatia. With a full range of facilities and over seven hundred births, it is located at the entrance to the famous Kornati Archipelago, which has over 150 islands, each worth visiting.

Clean, warm water for swimming, and numerous nature parks and preserves around the city provide plenty of relaxation and diversion. Accommodations are available on the islands of the Pasman canal for those who wish to truly be alone.

Boating is also a popular attraction. Tours, excursions, and day trips abound. Yacht rentals are also available. You can choose from packages that include a skipper to pilot the craft or, for the truly sea worthy vacationer, yachts that you can pilot yourself.
Tourist hotels, cottages and even private residences are available. There are numerous beaches, both on the coast and on nearby islands that can fit any taste or preference.
There are several national parks to visit, including Paklenica, Kornati Archipelago, Krka, and Telascica Nature Park.

Local festivals are frequent attractions, as well as one of the largest and best equipped tennis camps on the Western Adriatic Shore.

Like most of the cities of the Dalmatian coast, Biograd na Moru was first settled by Illyrian tribes from the Croatian inland.
Unlike that of other Dalmatian coastal towns, who first became a city under the expansive Roman, the modern history of Biograd na Moru begins in Croatia. Founded by Croatian Kings in the tenth century, it became their capital city and the center of religious authority for the ruling bishops of of the time.

Along with the rest of Croatia, Biograd na Moru became part of the Hungarian Kingdom in the twelfth century to avoid annexation by the less benign Hapsburg Dynasty.
During a period when Zadar, a neighboring city to the north was occupied by members of the Forth Crusade, Biograd na Moru became host to many of the cities refugees.

Italy's influence, avoided in the early part of our the last millennium, was finally felt in the fifteenth century when Biograd na Moru became a part of the Venetian Empire, where it would rest nearly four hundred years.

The city was virtually destroyed in numerous conflicts between the Venetian and Turkish empires in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Access to Biograd na Moru is usually by sea or from the airport in the nearby city of Zadar, just 15 km north of Biograd na Moru along the coast.
