History has Dubrovnik rivaling against Venice, it was the only one to attempt and win. The 15th century saw development due to the wealth and skilled diplomacy in Dubrovnik. The Croatian literature and Croatian language was developed in the city as it was home to many important people. Physicists, poets, mathematicians and painters inhabit the city of Dubrovnik.

Dubrava and Laus were founded to form Dubrovnik. The earthquake in 1667 resulted in rebuilding the plaza which was constructed in 1468. The two harbors were then built on each side of the isthmus. Dubrovnik ruled itself and became a free state in the 14th century. The slave trade was also done away with in the 15th century as they valued liberty with the highest regard.

In 1806 Napoleons forces entered Dubrovnik and ceased its harbor winning government demise and letting the French troop to enter the city. Marshal Marmont integrated its territory into the Illyrian provinces and led to the abolishment of the republic.

WWII saw Dubrovnik as the first part of the Independent State of Croatia. The Italian army processed Dubrovnik from 1941 to 1943 and then by the Germans in 1944. Partisans took it from the Germans and helped it become part of the Yugoslavia. The end of the war led to a major project of restoring and rebuilding keeping the history intact.

Some of the historical places to see are the Bell Tower, Roland’s Column, and plaza’s Sponza and Rector. Heavy bombing from 1992 to 1995 damaged many building by the Montenegrin Navy, but they have all been repaired, if you look real close you may still see some signs of the war.
