Croatia Makarska Travel Tourism Guide - This resort town located in the South Central portion of Croatia's Adriatic coastline. The harbor is in the center of a horseshoe shaped bay formed by the Osejava cape and St. Peter Peninsula, two lush, green pieces of land stretching out into the sea. Famous as a tourist center in the Dalmatian region of the Croatia, it is well known for it's visitor friendly promenade. Lined with palm trees and equipped with boutiques, bars, cafes and clubs, the promenade overlooks the harbor where many of the visitors have docked. When they are done enjoying the hot spots and the beautiful beach on the bay, a large hotel nearby is ready to accommodate the guests.

The history of Makarska dates back hundreds of years, during which it was an important sea port for several empires and dynasties. Once a part of the Venetian Empire, many examples of their culture and architecture remain preserved in within and around the city.

Makarska history dates back to the fourth century where the town was described as an Inaroanian settlement between Salona and Narona.

Archaeological digs and artifacts located in the town have shown strong evidence of a first or second century Roman settlement, as well as indications pre-historical habitation by the various tribes which roamed the Dalmatian coast before the Roman era.

Additional accounts of the area document the settling of Makarska by the Croats in the sixth and seventh centuries.

The town was referred to by it's present name, Makarska, in 1502 in a document written by Mohammad Musin, The town was, at that time, under Turkish control and was the base for a ferry used for trade other towns and countries along the Adriatic.

The natural protection of the Osejava cape and St. Peter Peninsula, along with strategically placed fortifying towers on the town walls, allowed Makarska to remain free of the control of the growing Venetian Empire until 1681. This hundred year period of Venetian rule was a time of great restoration and building within the city.

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Makarska switched between Austrian and French control, each government bringing many improvements to the infrastructure and educational systems of the town.

Behind the town, on the inland side, is Mount Biokovo, the second highest peak in Croatia. Serving as both a protective barrier and an aesthetic backdrop, those who travel to it's tops can be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Croatian countryside to the East and the Adriatic Coast to the West. On particularly clear days, Monte Gargano, a mountain directly across the Adriatic in Italy can be seen.

Each summer during the peak tourist season, thousands of visitors from the surrounding countries such as Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Hungary flock to Makarska Riviera for the night life and days in the sun.

The city is surrounded by beautiful countryside, characterized by meadows of wildflowers and stately pine forests.

Like most old Creation towns, Makarska has a central section dating back centuries. The old stone streets and ancient buildings make room for a flower and fruit market, a large church square and a Monastery built by the Franciscan Monks in the sixteenth century. The Monastery itself houses a world renowned sea shell collection. The pieces on view @include a very rare specimen of a giant clam shell.

Several fountains, left over from the town's Venetian period, are also high spots of a visit to Makarska. Numerous old churches and several palaces from the Baroque era can also be found.
