Croatia Nin Travel Tourism Guide - The town is historically important as a Christian bishopric in the middle ages and it was also the seat of the Princess of Dalmatia. In the ninth century the Illyrian tribes of the Liburnians came to this area and a well preserved Byzantine mosaic has been found in a Roman villa nearby. The first Croats arrived in the seventh century and it became the first Croatian royal town. The medieval settlement was called Nona in the tenth century.

Nin was the residence of the Croatian kings and became under Venetian rule from 1328 until 1797. Nin was developed as a tourist town after 1969. On the islet of Zecevo some monks built a church and dedicated it to Our Lady of Zecevo. The Turks destroyed the church in 1500 and threw the statue of Our Lady of Zecevo into the sea and the statue washed up on the shores of Nin This event is commemorated on the fifth of may every year when the statue is taken back to Zecevo.

Nin is a town on the Zdrijac peninsula in the Zadar County and has a population of 1, 256. The local economy is based upon farming, vine growing, olives, fruit and tourism. The area has the largest deposits of peloid mud that is used here medicinally. The center of Nin is on an islet in a lagoon with two bridges connecting it to the mainland. There are several of these lagoons around Nin. The shallow sea has a temperature of two to three degree Celsius.
There is an art gallery in the town called the Visoslav, which holds exhibitions from well known Croatian painters every year. The church of the Holy Cross contains pre-Romanesque remains and there is also a pre-Romanesque church of St Nicholas in Prahulje, which dates from the eleventh century. It was erected on a prehistoric mound and has an observational tower that was built during the Turkish wars.
