Croatia Novi Vinodolski Travel Tourism Guide - The town of Novi Vinodolski is situated on the coast of the Velbit’s Channel and is in the southeast part of the Vindol’s fertile valley. The old part of the town was built upon the hill and the lower part later on beside the sea. There are remains of a Roman fortress called ‘Lapsica’. The town of Novi Vinodolski was first documented in 1288.

The Novigrad Kastel, an important citadel, belonged to the powerful Frankopan family from the year 1288. The castle was devastated in 1761 and now only the ruins remain. The Frankopan castle now houses the museum and an art gallery, which contain archaeological and ethnographical collections including Frankopan artifacts. The manuscript of the Vindol Code used to be houses in Novi Vinodolski and the document dates from 1288. The Vindol code is written in the Glagothic script.

There used to be a Paulist monastery nearby with white friars and was known to exist in the year 1446. The church of St Philip and St Jakob was built in 1520. This stands on a small plateau above the town. The first spa was built here in 1878.
The local residents mainly work in tourism, catering, wood processing and stone masonry. Agricultural work has mainly disappeared around this area. The largest Eastern European carnival is held here in Novi Vinodolski every year.

There are several boat trips available from Novi Vinodolski to the neighboring islands. If you like walking, there are several walking and mountaineering trails around the local area or if you prefer cycling there are 6 designated cycling routes.

Subject: Marilyn Murphy - Piskulich

Hi Marilyn

Piskulich was in fact the original spelling of the name in the 17th century (if you ever get the chance have a look in the old church records). The modern Croatian alphabet was only introduced in the mid 19th century. So it is not really anglicised, only back to its roots!

I think the place you want is Ledenice - a few km SE of Novi. I think it is now part of Novi's town council

The only possibility of the other name is Mrzljak, an old Vinodol name. If you say Mrzljak quickly it comes out 'Murjuoc'

My family has been Australian for 80 years but I still have an interest in Novi history and family connections

Regards

John

My mother was born in Novi Vindol. I would like to investigate any records that might exist.

Her maiden name was Piskulich - and my grandmother's name was Murjuoc (?)

My father was also Croatian and his parents came from Lidenic (?) Is that near Nov?

Hi Marilyn,

Your mothers maiden name was most likely spelt "Piskulic", the "h" at the end was commonly added to anglicize the name.

Novi Vinodolski belongs to the "Primorsko-Goranska" County or 051 - Primorje and Gorski Kotar County, if you go here http://www.tportal.hr/imenik/default.asp?lang=1 and search on "Piskulic" you will see that there are a fair few "Piskulic" in the area of Novi Vinodolski and even neighboring city of Rijeka, that is a natural move for the youth to move to the cities.

The surname of "Murjuoc" does not sound as if it correct, It doesn't sound Croatian, with the "juoc", are you sure that the spelling is correct? here did you get the name from?

On my other website you can do a search for Croatian town and city names and their postcodes - http://www.about-croatia.com/croatia-postcodes.php

I can't find any place in Croatia called "Lidenic", the closest name I could find is "Lisicic", assuming that at least the first and last 2 characters are correct.
