Croatia Primosten Travel Tourism Guide - Primosten is part of the Sibenik-Knin County. It is in the south between the cities of Sibenik and Trogir on the Adriatic coast. Primosten is one of the most popular tourist resorts in Dalmatia and was formerly an island. This was bridged with an embankment to the mainland, around 500 years ago. Primosten was once called Capusta Custa in documents dating from 1564.

During the Turkish invasions in the year of 1542, a wall, towers, and a drawbridge connecting to the mainland protected the islet. The causeway eventually replaced the drawbridge and in 1564, the settlement became known as Primosten after the Croatian verb primostiti meaning to span.

The church of St George dominates the town of Primosten at the highest point and was built in 1485, restored in 1760. The church of Our Lady of Compassion was built in 1553 and another important sacral building is the church of St Rocks that was also built in 1553. At the entrance to the town is a Baroque chapel dating from 1790.
Primosten is on a small hilly peninsula and was once a small Mediterranean fishing village. The biggest beach is called Raduca and the smaller part of it, is called Mala Raducca, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia. Primosten is also famous for its vineyards, which produce Bubic red wine. Seven small islands surround Primosten and the town is protected from the northern winds, giving a mild climate.

The locals are generally employed in agriculture (vines and olives), fishing, and tourism. There is a traditional donkey race held here every summer. The town is popular for its stone houses, narrow streets and nearby pine forests. The local specialty is the spiny lobster a la Primosten.
