Croatia Senj Travel Tourism Guide - Senj is a city on the Adriatic coast, which lies beneath the Vratnik mountain pass in the Lika-Senj County and has a population of 8100. The city is a seaside tourist resort. St George is the city’s protector and is on the coats of arms.

The city has been inhabited since the prehistoric times on Kuk hill 3000 years ago and was first mentioned in Greek documents that are dated to the fourth century BC. Senj gradually moved nearer to the sea. The Romans built more of the town, which they called Senia and it became an important port and trading town. In the seventeenth century, the Croats settled in Senj. The templar's then took over for seventy years.

Senj developed the glagorithic alphabet and there are remnants of this in terms of stone boards, hand written books and documents. One of the earliest printing presses was set up here in 1494.

The square Nehaj fortress was built in 1558 under the watchful eye of Captain Ivan Lenkovic and Captain Herbert the eighth. The fortress was built to protect against Turkish and Venetian attacks. The fortress now has exhibitions of the local history and there are eleven cannons on the second floor. There are excellent views from the top of the building.
Senj city museum is located in the former palace of the Vukasovic family. The building was built between the fourteenth and the fifteenth century in the gothic and renaissance style. The museum was established in 1962 and contains archaeological and ethnographic collections.

From the city of Senj, it is easy to reach the mountains of the Velebit and the Velebit National Park. The city is also on the edge of a forested cove called Senjska Draga.
