Croatia Sibenik Travel Tourism Guide - Located at the point where the river Krka joins the waters of the Central Adriatic Sea, the historic Croatian city Sibenik sits quietly by the sea waiting for visitors. It is one of the oldest native Croatian towns.

This coastal town is known throughout the region as a center of culture and art. A prime example is the annual International Children's Festival, held in June for nearly fifty years.

Several examples of world architecture can be found, including Cathedral of St. James, built over many years and embracing both Gothic and Renaissance styles. This church is notable enough to earn a place on the UNESCO world heritage list.

Sibenik's more recent contributions to the world @include the late basketball star Drazen Petrovic and actor Goran Visnjic, known to millions as Dr. Luka Kovac in the hit TV Series 'ER'.

Sibenik is located on the Bay of Sibenik, a natural harbor on the Croatian Coast. The town is arranged in concentric arcs moving inward from the curved shoreline, like a giant amphitheater.

The bay lends itself to many water related activities, including yachting, rowing and diving.
The nearby Kornati Archipelago and many local water features such as the Skradinski Buk, Visovac abd Roski Waterfalls make up a pleasing and popular aquatic attraction.

Another draw to Sibenik is the Krka National Park. Comprising more than 100 square kilometers of relatively unspoiled wild lands, this famous European park is located on the bank of the Krka river.

Sibenik is divided into two sections. The old town is in the Western or seaward end of the city. This is characterized with narrow streets and old world shops along steep alley ways cutting through the centuries old buildings. Here you can find many examples of traditional Sibenik and Croatian food, featuring many lamb delicacies.

Access to Sibenik is easy from the sea. There is no airport in Sibenik proper, but it is easily reached from the airport in the nearby town of Split.

Most other Dalmatian cities were initially Illyrian tribal settlements which became cities after being taken over by the Romans in the first and second centuries. It was only after the fall of Rome that these cities began to see the influx of Croatian natives from inland that would grow to dominate their populations.

Sibenik, on the other hand, was created by the Petar Kresimir the IV, a king in Croatia in the 11th century. While excavations showed pre-Croat inhabitants of the area, it was the act of Kesimir that created the town that we know today.

In the fifteenth century, like much of the surrounding countryside, this city came under the control of the growing Venetian Empire, which controlled Sibenik until it's fall at the end of the eighteenth century.

During the political upheavals of the twentieth century, it was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which was awarded to the Soviets following World War II. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Sibenik finally was restored to it's proper place as a Croatian possession and part of the newly formed Republic of Croatia.
