Croatia Split Travel Tourism Guide - The warm climate attracts tourists from all over the world. The historical museums that provide culture and history of Split give the visitor a look at the development that has taken place over the last seventeen centuries. The soft warming breeze blows the palm trees creating a feeling of peacefulness. The morning sun glistens off the morning drops of dew on the cacti. The largest and most attractive view of the Adriatic Sea can be seen in the city of Split. Sailing around the peninsula gives you an incredible view of the ancient times Split has seen.

The city of Split is very important in the Dalmatia. It is considered the largest and most attractive cities located on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea. It is a small peninsula between the Split Channel and the Gulf of Kastela. Best known as one of the sunniest European cities, Split attracts many tourists with its hot and dry weather during the summer months. The winters are warm and wet with rainfall that allows the cultivated forest to grow beautiful palm trees and cacti.

The location of Split is known as the international port with its ferry services and airport. The islands of Greece and Italy can be accessed with the ferry serviced from Split. Because Split is a center for tourists, you can travel to Trogir on a day bus and also Hvar can be reached from Split by a hydrofoil. The warm sea breeze off the Adriatic Sea draws people from everywhere wanting to go rafting and enjoy the boat tours that allow you to see areas of the peninsula inaccessible by land.
The mountains Kozjak and Mosor along with the hill Marjan keep the cold air from reaching Split with the bitter cold from the Adriatic Sea during the winter months. The winter is a little cold, but the protection of the mountains allows for long walks around the streets of Split.

With so much history, Split is considered to be of Croatian culture. In medieval times, churches showed signs of the Croatian culture in its architecture, still showing today. The city of Split received its name from the monastery Sustipan that was Saint Stephen under pines. The most elegant features of Split are the two museums, one dedicated to medieval periods and one for antiquity.

In the third century Diocletian, Roman Emperor built the first castle in Split. The castle was built from white limestone found around the quarries of Brac. The sphinxes and granite columns were imported from the Proconnesos. The castle is linked from east to west by the transverse road, which splits the castle into halves. Diocletian was known for his Christian persecution.

After the twelfth century, being controlled by Hungarian nobility, the Venetian Republic took control. The population remained Croatian through this period. The middle ages saw Split turn into a port city though the Klis pass. Between 1806 and 1813 there was a period where Split was under Napoleonic rule, but Split remained strong.

After the World War II, Split became a very important commercial and culture area. The new factories that were built drew a number of migrants to the city looking for work. The population of Split tripled by 1990 and the city expanded onto the entire peninsula.

Split is home to many large metallurgy plants as well chemical works. The city also houses production plants that produce solar cells. The scientific institutions in Split are nationally known for many different types of research programs.

Today Split has became more of a tourist attraction and the city relies on tourism and trades such as concrete, paper, fishing, wine, olive oil and chemicals as a way of supporting the economy.

Diocletian palace tour

The historic core of Split with Diocletian palace is among the first urban complexes to enter the list of the UNESCO world heritage in year 1979. Most probably this one of a kind Imperial Palace was built from 298. till 305. AD.

and it is one of the most significant original structures of the late ancient architecture mostly because of it’s preservation.

Later this Palace contributed to the broadening of town because the city evolved on its walls. The unique substructure halls were newley explored and each year they show more to the public. The Cellars of the Palace are pearl of wonders with many fascinating artefacts displayed there and that is why we guide you in basement halls!
