Croatia Trogir Travel Tourism Guide - Trogir is one of many coastal towns in the central region of Croatia's Adriatic shoreline. Unlike many of the other Croatian coastal and island possessions whose history stemmed from tribal settlements, the first colonists were Greeks in the third century BC. The Greeks traveled from the Island of Vis, an Adriatic island that is now part of Croatia, and made Trogir a major seaport, The Greek control lasted until the beginning of the Roman Empire's incursion into the the Northern Adriatic.

In the ninth century, well after the fall of the Roman Empire, Trogir and the other Dalmatian Coastal areas came under the control of the Croatians, and during this period Trogir paid tributes to the Croatian Kings.

The Venetian Empire held sway over this town beginning in 1420 and continuing until the fall of the Empire in 1797. After this period, Trogir became a possession of the Hapsburg empire.

Trogir has a unique tradition in that it has been an urban center for more than two millennia. It carries in it the traditions of the great empires of Greece, Rome and Venice, as well as the culture of the Slavs and Croats who migrated there at various times.

Trogir's architecture reflects this layering of history. Many exceptional palaces, churches and other structures are preserved. Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles are all represented.
A major attraction for the historian is a fortification on a nearby island. The streets of the island complex are arranged in an orthogonal layout, which is a series of concentric arcs, and dates back to the original Greek settlers.

The has many examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture that are not only interesting historically but through careful preservation are interesting esthetically as well. There is no better place to view intact structures of these eras in all of Central Europe.

Other examples of historical attractions include, The City Core, with buildings and churches dating back to the thirteenth century, the seventeenth century City Gate, and the fifteenth century Fortress Kamerlengo.

Fishing and agriculture and shipbuilding are the primary industries of the city, with shipbuilding leading the way. The Trogir shipyards can handle the construction of two 55,000 ton ships side by side. Established in 1993, by the year 2004, Trogir had constructed 93 seaworthy vessels.

While shipbuilding is the largest single industry, tourism is the single largest segment of the economy in this harbor town, which is good news for the Adriatic vacationer. Hotels, resorts and private residences can accommodate as many as twenty thousand visitors.

Many visitors come to see the Old Core of the town which is actually located on a small island off the coast, and can be reached by a stone bridge.

Trogir is easily accessible from the sea, with harbors that can berth a variety of private and cruise crafts.

Bus, road and rail travel to Trogir is also a good way to get there from other cities in Croatia and on the Adriatic coast. The two closest cities with air connections are Zadar to the North and Split to the South.
