Croatia Zadar Travel Tourism Guide - With miles of beautiful Adriatic beaches and easy access to the many resort islands that are part of the Zadar archipelago, Zadar is a modern resort town with a long history.

The history of Zadar, in fact, dates back more than 3,000 years.

Originally settled, as many of the other Dalmatian islands, buy Liburnian tribes from the mainland, it was taken over by the Romans in the first century. The new Roman owners took a special interest in this settlement and made it one of the central facilities of the Dalmatian territories. The Liburnian settlement was raised and replaced with a carefully planned and executed Roman town. This type of town, known as the 'urbs quadrata' style, featured a symmetrical series of streets set at precise right angles. This network provided easy and safe access to the many public and private buildings set up to aid in the administration of the Dalmatian coast.

Since Zadar is directly across the Adriatic sea and in a control position over access to the Northern Adriatic and the Italian Panhandle, this settlement had strategic as well as commercial importance.
So important was this city that the emperor Augustus donated much of the material needed to build the fortifying gates and walls needed to protect the Zadar from the mainland barbarians.

As in most Roman built cities, the central Forum was the heart of the town, both socially and politically. Shops, theaters, and temples were just a few staples of city life clustered around the Forum. The city had it's own amphitheater for larger productions, located outside the town along the rout chosen for the aqueducts. At the end of the third century, with the decay and fall of the Roman empire, the Romanesque character of the city began to be supplanted by the growing Christian influence. Churches replaced temples and baths, and Roman architecture was replaced by the traditions of the inland peoples. A church complex, which included a Cathedral, basilica, sacristy and numerous annexes was constructed over the original site of the city's Forum. This construction lasted through the latter part of the fourth century and into the fifth. The original sacristy room is still preserved today.

In the eleventh century, conflict over the Dalmatian coast erupted again. The Croatian King annexed Zadar to Croatia, but the Venetian Empire had designs on this Adriatic plumb. However, though it made many forays into Zadar and the neighboring region, the Venetians were unable to maintain control for any period of time.

During the Renaissance period, many new buildings and structures were commissioned, adding yet another architectural layer to the cities character. Among these are the Town Land Gate and the Quarters of the Town Guard.
