Croatia Dakovo Travel Tourism Guide - Dakovo is sometimes otherwise known as Djakovo and it is in the region of Slavonia. The town is at 111 meters above sea level and has a population of twenty thousand. Dakovo is part of a rich and fertile agricultural region. The main occupations of the locals are farming, livestock breeding, printing and tourism.

St Peter’s neo-gothic cathedral, a Bolle masterpiece, is one of the region’s and Slavonia’s most important landmark. The cathedral is a symbol for the town of Dakovo and is also Slavonia’s sacral landmark. It was built between 1866 and 1882, overseen by Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the Bishop of Dakovo. The interior of the cathedral contains some magnificent frescos and also the tomb of Strossmayer. Local art exhibitions are held within the cathedral on a regular basis.

Outside the cathedral is the nineteenth century landscaped park, which is located near the Bishop’s Palace. The park is considered a horticultural monument.

Every year a folklore show called Dakovacki Vezovi or Dakovo embroidery, is held. The festival has traditional dancing, folk costumes, singing and a show with the local well known pure white Lipizzaner horses from Ivandvor with the wedding wagon.

The nearby lakes of Josava and Borovik offer good fishing opportunities. If you prefer hunting, then try the mountain of Dilj. Try the local Slavonian cuisine of smoked sausages and venison. The Dakovo region also has its own wines that are well worth sampling. Alternative activities such as horse riding, tennis and swimming are also available.
