Croatia Gorski Kotar Travel Tourism Guide - Gorski Kotar is a mountainous region in Croatia between Karlovac and Rijeka. Sixty-three percent of Gorski Kotar is forested and is thus called the ‘green lungs of Croatia’ or ‘Croatian Switzerland’. The region is divided between the counties of Primorje-Gorski and Karlovac. Delnice is the largest city of the region and is its centre. All three Croatian dialects can be heard in the region and the main occupations are forestry, commerce, metalworking, agriculture, and tourism.

The first known inhabitants of the region were the Illyrian tribe, the Lapodes, who lived here from the ninth century BC. In the sixth century, the Slavs settled here. During the twelfth century, the noble family of the Frankopans began to rule part of the region and created a stronghold in Bosiljevo. In the fifteenth century, many defensive towers were built to protect the area against impending invasions. Iron mining and metal manufacturing developed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Caber. The number of inhabitants in the region increased after the opening of the Karolina road in the eighteenth century.

In the Neapolitan wars, the region became part of the French Illyrian provinces. At this time, Delnice grew into the most developed centre in the region. After the war, Gorski Kotar became part of the Habsburg monarchy and in 1873, the first railway was built.

Gorski Kotar is on the karstic plateau, which is a climatic barrier between the continental and littoral parts of the region. The highest point within Gorski Kotar is Bjelolasica at 1534 meters. The lower levels of the region are covered in deciduous woodland and the mountainous area has strong winds, snow, and ice. The poisonous snake, the horned viper, is common in this region and you may be lucky enough to spot the rare white snake. There is also a three-fingered turkey cock, which is a relict from the Stone Age.

You can enjoy a variety of recreational activities within the region such as horse riding, rafting on the river Kupa or canoeing. There are several mountain biking and walking routes available to choose from. There is a selection of hunting areas where you can hunt for red deer, roe deer, wild boar, and bears. Fishing is available on the local rivers and lakes or if you like skiing there are several ski resorts in the region such as Platak.

Places to visit within the region are the Risnjak National Park and Golubinjak Forest Park, which has monolithic rocks and the tallest pine tree at 37 meters. You can view several caves including the Lokvarka cave with 1200 meters of cave and 4 galleries.
