Croatia Karlovac Travel Tourism Guide - The ideal location to see history and enjoy the warm and dry climate offered. The rivers provide for great fishing and angling as well as sunbathing. The festival, such as the Beer Day, with the famous beer Karlovac is famous for flows freely during the festival. Many horticultural monuments attract attention along with the old town roads.

Central Croatia is the location of Karlovac and it has a population of over forty-nine thousand people. When you look at the municipality the population ranges over fifty-nine thousand. Karlovac is situated on the highway Zagreb-Rijeka and the railway as well.

Radiceva Street is where you can see where the Governor’s Gate was. This area is non traffic and considered to be the main promenade of Karlovac. The Holy Trinity Church has a bell tower that towers over the city. This church and another called Franciscan Monastery dominated the central part of town.

The location of Josip Jelacic Square is where one would start exploring the old city. This part of town is built in the shape of a star. The town is located by the four rivers Dobra, Kupa, Mreznica and Korana. The town has become popular for traffic from Zagreb to the sea coastline. If swimming is what you like, the town beach provides for fun and relaxation, the Foginovo Kupaliste is located on the Korana River.

Built in 1579, Karlovac was to strengthen the southern defenses of Austria against Ottoman. The original name Karlstadt and was designed by Matija Gambon under the orders of Charles II. The fire of 1594 burned all the building including the first church which was built in 1580, Holy Trinity. Rebuilding of Karlovac has been slow, but they have rebuild many older buildings that still show the history of the town.

Ottoman forces tried to take Karlovac but failed seven times. The last time they tried was in 1672. The population was lowered with the 1773 plague epidemic. In the 18th century started the population of Karlovac with added roads, waterways and seaways that were constructed long the Kupa River. The declining fortunes of the city occurred in the 20th century, but the city is trying to recover. Known now for the beer Karlovacko, this is the main industry. Since war times Karlovac has become a textile, metal-processing, diesel engines and wood producing town.
Building Karlovac back up and attracting tourism is a goal that may take quite sometime, as some of the inhabitants are still trying to reclaim what is rightfully theirs. The Serbs are slowly returning back to the town only to find out they have no home or work.
