Croatia Knin Travel Tourism Guide - The town of Knin is 55 kilometers northeast from the city of Sibenik and has been an important strategic centre for many centuries. There are numerous archaeological remains around Knin, remains of a Roman settlement have been found beneath the fortress. A diocese was formed here in 1040. Knin used to be the most important fortress within Dalmatia and the town became very prosperous during the reign of the King Zvonimir, between the years 1074 and 1088. After this, the town became an important military strategic center until the end of the nineteenth century when the town then became an economic and a commercial center. During the war Knin was the center of the homeland rebels.

There is a well preserved Knin fort that sits on top of the Spas hills and overlooks the town. The medieval fortress dates from the tenth century but the present fort is eighteenth century. This is one of the largest fortification buildings in Dalmatia and there are great views from it over the town and surrounding countryside. The building has the Croatian national flag flying from it that was raised to commemorate the victory of the Homeland war in 1995. The fortress used to house the museum of Croatian antiquities until this was relocated to Split.

The town controls the roads that connect the sea to the hinterland. Knin is in the county of Sibenik-Knin and there are over 11, 000 inhabitants. Knin used to be the capital of Croatia in 1080 and is otherwise known as the capital of the kings. Knin is has a lot of cultural and historical monuments. The town is near the source of the river Krka and also the Krka National Park. There is plenty nearby to entertain mountaineers and speleologists. The Burnum reserve is a good place to take part in sports such as fishing and hunting. Knin is at an elevation of 220 meters and the main occupations here are farming, textile work, metalworking, livestock breeding, gypsum and limestone quarrying.
