Croatia Medimurje Travel Tourism Guide - Medimurje is a triangular shaped county is the northern most part of Croatia. It is otherwise known as the Hortus Croatiae or the garden of Croatia. Medimurje is also fondly known as the little Medimurje. In the west of the county are the slopes of the Alpine foothills. Medimurje borders with the countries of Slovenia and Hungary.

The first inhabitants of this area were from the Stone Age in the fifth century BC. Cakovec has a museum of Medimurje, which was founded in 1954 and has collections of archaeology, ethnographic and history. The museum also holds an art gallery.

The fortified town of Cakovec was first mentioned in historical records in the year of 1333. It was believed to have been founded on the site of a wooden fortress that was constructed in the thirteenth century by the Count Dimitrje who was at that time the ruler of the region of Medimurje.


The turtledove and the violet are unofficial symbols of Medimurje. The county covers the area between the rivers of Mura and Drava. The land has an elevation between the height of 120 meters and the peak of Mohokos that stands at 344 meters. There are occasional earthquakes here and the county covers an area of 729.5 square kilometers. Over half of the county is used for agriculture and there is a very high population density.

Medimurje’s principal city is Cakovec and there are two smaller cities, Mursko Gredisce and Prelog. Medimurje has 29 municipalities with a total of 119,500 residents. It is Croatia’s smallest county but is the most densely populated. The county is famous for its vineyards.
