Croatia Ogulin Travel Tourism Guide - Ogulin is a town in north-western Croatia in the county of Karlovac. The town has a population of 15,054 and is 323 meters above sea level. The name Ogulin originates from the Latin word ‘obgula’ that means the abyss of charm.
Ogulin was first mentioned in 1500 and it is connected to an important member of the Frankopan family, the Prince Bernard Frankopan. The prince built the renaissance castle of Ogulin in 1498. The castle now houses the County Museum, which opened in 1967. The town was under royal control from 1563. Economic growth and population increased when the railway reached Ogulin in 1873.

The town has several clear springs and two Principle Rivers, the Dobra and Zagorska Mreznica. Nearby is Lake Sabljoci, which is excellent for fishing. The area around Ogulin holds a number of caves; the most interesting is the Dobra abyss, otherwise known as the Djulin abyss and is a hydrological monument. The abyss leads into the largest speleogical object in Croatia, which has a length of 16.4 meters. Many alpinists and mountaineers visit the abyss.

Klek Mountain is 1182 meters high and resembles a giant that is sleeping on its back. The mountain is the subject of much folklore and legends. Klek has been designated as a Botanical Reserve.

The ‘Karlek’ tourist train runs between Zagreb and Ogulin. Passengers are welcomed into Ogulin by witches as the area is full of witch related legends. The County museum has archaeological, ethnographic, alpinist and mountaineering collections.

Notable spots to visit are Kula, the stone castle, the medieval fortress of Modrus, and the tall mountain nearby called Klek. Ogulin day is celebrated on the 14th of September with the glorification of the Holy Ghost. Several notable novelists and singers come from the town. The town’s main occupations of its inhabitants are farming, livestock breeding, and wood processing.
