Croatia Osijek Travel Tourism Guide - The location of Osijek is easy to get to. Once you are there the fishing and swimming is a great way to relax. The heritage and historical building provide some amazing culture. The adjacent cities are easy enough to get to for a sightseeing tour as well. Indoor and outdoor water activities will keep you relaxed and peaceful.

The city is the capital in Slavonia, which is located on the bank of Drava River. This is upstream from the Danube River. They most popular ways to get to the city is by highway, railway, airport and boat. By 2008 the highway construction is expected to be finished and will link with other Croatian motorway.

Hunting and angling on the Drava River provides excellent opportunities. The semi official gastronomical capital as the city is known because of the abundance of game and agriculture. Swimming is also done on the sandbanks of the river as well.

The airport of Osijek is about twenty minutes away from the city. The people are very warm and friendly. The climate is warm and dry, which also make this a great city to visit. It is a short distance to the city of Vukovar, but you do want to stay on the road, it is not known for certain if that area is de-mined.

The last three hundred years have seen Osijek building some amazing architectural structures. The heritage is preserved and shows the middle-European culture that has become popular with tourists. The industry of Osijek is livestock breeding and sugar beet farming along with many other products and goods.

Neolithic times were the beginning of existence in Osijek and they were Illyrian tribes. Croats settled near Mursa and gave Osijek its name after the Battle of Mursa Major. Mentions of the city are dated back to 1196. The Korog family had the property between 1353 and 1472. The Ottoman Empire destroyed the city in 1526. The oriental style was done by the Turks. The long wooden bridge was then built by Suleiman I and is famous for onlookers. By the end of the 17th century Osijek was finally called a city officially.

Western rule was later restored in 1687 by the Habsburg Empire. A new fortress was build by Austrian's and was called Tvrda. The war of Croatia from 1991 to 1995 saw thousands of people killed by shelling from the Serb's. The city was able to withstand little damage to its Hungarian Baroque architecture.

Some of the famous buildings in Osijek are Bey’s sarai and Mekkema, which is the courthouse, Kasim-pasha’s, Medresa and Mekteb, which are the secondary and primary Moslem schools and Sahat-kula, which is the clock tower. The Croatian National Theater on Zupanijska Street is a picturesque sight. The beautiful architecture is totally amazing.

The spoken language today is a mixture of words from German, Hungarian, Croatian and Turkish. This is common with the culture today. The very few older residents still living in Osijek today. With the beer and winemaking, Osijek has a popular beer called Eseker and wine called Baranja which are served in the city and some surrounding areas.
