Croatia Ozalj Travel Tourism Guide - Ozalj is a town in central Croatia, and it is situated north of Karlovac and southwest of Jastrebarsko. Ozalj at an elevation of 166 meters was built on a limestone cliff above the banks of the River Kupa and has a population of 7932. The local area has plenty of prehistoric, Roman and mediaeval remains. In the nearby Trescorborovac and Vrlovka caves, prehistoric remains have been found.

Ozalj was first mentioned in 1241 as a free royal town. The Frankopan family owned the town since the year 1398 and it then passed to the Zrinski family in 1550. Ozalj remained with the Zrinski family until 1671. The old Babonic castle that was home to the Zrinski and Frankopan family has gothic and baroque elements in its architecture. The castle is now a category I monument and houses the Home museum, founded in 1971, which contains items from the prehistoric times to the noble families artifacts. The town also has a baroque parish church, which dates from the fourteenth century, St Vid.

The medieval town was renovated in the eighteenth century into a court. There are only a few medieval buildings that have been preserved. The town used to be entered by a drawbridge until 1821 when a bridge was built and an entrance tower was created in 1559. If you look carefully you can see loopholes for defense underneath the bridge.

Good fishing can be found in the Kupa River, such as Chub, Carp and Pike. There are also spectacular hunting grounds nearby for boar, dear and rabbits.

There is an ethnographic park nearby in Trg, with thatched cottages, which are typical of the local area. These contain handmade textiles.

Ozalj’s special day is April the 30th as in 1671 Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan were executed by beheading.
