Croatia Pozega Travel Tourism Guide - Pozega is in central Slavonia and has a population of 28.201.The city was built upon the Roman settlement of Incerum that was on the bank of the Orljava. In medieval times, Pozega became the county’s centre. The Jesuits founded a school for philosophy and theology in 1699. The city was first mentioned in 1277.

The fortress of Pozega was a hexagonal eleventh century fortification upon a hill in the centre of the town. The Franciscan monastery and the Church of the Holy Ghost were built in the thirteenth century. The remains of St Lawrence church date from the fourteenth century, the church has some medieval frescos and an old organ. The Turks seized Pozega in 1537 and ruled the area for 150 years before Pozega became liberated in 1688. Pozega was the first city in Croatia to use the Croatian language properly in 1847.

The main occupations of the city’s inhabitants are farming, livestock breeding, printing and textiles industry. Pozega is 152 meters above sea level and is in a fertile valley. Try fishing on the river Orljava or game hunting in the nearby hills.
