Croatia Sinj Travel Tourism Guide - The town of Sinj grew around an ancient fortress and a Franciscan monastery that was held by the Ottomans until the end of the eighteenth century. The locals became victorious over the Ottoman army in 1715. The Sinjska Gospa is the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary that is said to have helped the local population against the Ottoman Wars in 1715. The image is paraded through the town every year on the fifteenth of August and draws pilgrims to Sinj. The Church of St Mary contains the painting. There is also a one hundred year old horse race held here every year that is a knights tournament called Ginjska Alka and is held on the first Sunday in august. The tournament was established in 1715.

Sinj used to be called Setovia. The Illyrians were the first to settle here and then the Romans created a settlement called Aequum. The settlement can be found in Citluk. The Franciscan monastery was destroyed by the Turks. Ignacije Macanovic built the Kamicak fortress above the city in the eighteenth century. There is a roman monument dedicated to a game, which is similar to today’s football, and the Romans used a ball that was made out of leather.

Sinj is a town in the Split-Dalmatia County and has a population of 11,500. The town is an area called Cetinska Krajina that is a grove of settlements. Sinj is situated on a fertile field that is a karst feature. The Cetina River passes through the town, which is situated between four mountains. Sinj is at an elevation of 326 meters and the chief occupations of the locals are farming, livestock breeding, and textiles. Nearby is the mount Visoka. The Museum of Cetinska Krajina holds ethnographic and archaeological collections.
