The sixth largest city in Croatia, Slavonski Brod has a population of over sixty-five thousand people. Located in the region of Slavonia, it is also a river port on the Sava River. Highways and railways pass through the city and connect the Middle East and West Europe.

July is considered to be the sunniest month and the warmest. June and July are said to be wettest months during the summer and January sees the coldest month. Also Slavonski has 31 playgrounds available for children to play and enjoy the outdoors.

The area has cultures events for adults and children to enjoy during all the months of the year. Swimming can be done in one of the many in ground pools. With a good climate during June tourism seems to flourish during that month.

The surrounding area of the city produces wine that comes from the Zdjelarevic cellar, which just happens to be the best wine in all of Croatia. The city is also known for its rich culture with a Franciscan monastery and a fortress. Hunting grounds surround the town and have some interesting fishponds and a lake for some great fishing.

The city relies on fruit growing, farming, timber, metal processing, leather and printing industries to boost the economy. Dating all the way back to the Paleolithic period, the oldest living creatures trace back to the Tertiary period. The oldest time found for humans in the Paleolithic period.

In 1244 Slavonski Brod was gifted in a deed, by a Croatian-Hungarian king. The city was owned by feudal family Berislavic-Grabarski. In 1699, education was started in the city; this was after the Karlovac’s peace treaty with the Turk’s. Today there are eleven primary schools, eight secondary and a primary elementary music school. The Faculty of Engineering is also located in Brod.

Berislavici built the city towards the end of the 15th century and into the 16th century. Danger from the Turk’s invading Bosnia in 1463 was the reason for building the city with trenches and bulwarks for protection.

An event in Slavonski history was the building of the fortress in the 18th century. It was built for protection from the Turks, but this purpose was never confirmed. The danger of Turks has already weakened in the time of its construction and soon it was gone. The fortress contributed considerable in the entire development of town, but it became a problem by stopping its natural, topographical development because it was forbidden to build buildings of brick in its surroundings.

In the 19th century Slavonski Brod became a colony looking like an agricultural city because its inhabitants had gardens, barns and holding cattle. The town-planning made Brace Radica Street, A. Starcevica Street, M. Mesica and Petra Kresimira IV Streets. Jews were settling in Brod around 1870, when there were enough of them to establish worship, the Jewish community, in 1892 built the synagogue.

In the years after the war, the town was rebuilt intensely and it decided to renew residential and economic buildings. The building process lasted until 1950, when the town entered the period of economic development and progress of industry.
