Croatia Slunj Travel Tourism Guide - Slunj is a town is the mountainous part of Croatia and is situated between Karlovac and the Plitvice Lakes. The town has a population of 6096 people and is in the centre of the region of Kordun.

Slunj was once an old fortification built against the Turks during the war and constructed by the Frankopan's. The fort was the property of the Frankopan's from the fifteenth century and the family also built a monastery as well. Slunj was first mentioned in the twelfth century in official documents. In the sixteenth century the town became ravaged during the Ottoman wars. The fort was burnt in 1882 and the walls were destroyed by the world war two cannons.

The town is famous for the little waterfalls and well preserved corn mills that date back to the eighteenth century. The corn mills are situated in the lower part of the town, which is called Rastoke, the name means the branching of the rivers Korana and the Slunjcica. Rastoke has some 300 year old wooden houses that have been recently renovated.

The area around Slunj is a paradise for swimmers and rowing. The rivers are rich with fish and you can go hunting for pheasants and rabbits. There are a number of bike routes that you can follow. The first Croat to win an Olympic medal was born here in Slunj. If you like locally caught fish then fresh trout is served in the restaurants. The confluence of the two rivers is one of the prettiest places in Croatia and is well worth a visit. There are numerous streams, waterfalls, mills, ponds and lakes. Rastoke is built on a limestone barrier and the waterfalls are karst phenomena so they won’t be there forever.
