Croatia Trakoscan Travel Tourism Guide - Trakoscan is a tourist resort that is close to the Zagreb to Maribor highway and it is also close to the Slovenia border. The town is famous for the Draskovic castle, otherwise known as the ‘pearl of Hrvatsko Zagorje’ and the nearby artificial lake.

Trakoscan castle is a very well known, popular and magical castle within Croatia. This historical monument has been a museum since 1953 and was founded by the Republic of Croatia. The museum’s exhibits range in date from the fifteenth century to the nineteenth century. The castle consists of four levels but not all of the castle’s rooms are open to the public as some parts of the castle are still undergoing restoration. The castle was built in the thirteenth century as part of Croatia’s fortification system. The castle was meant as a small observational fortress and was first mentioned in historical records in 1334. The Draskovic family came into possession of the castle in 1584 as a present from King Maximilan. The castle was then turned into a residential manor house in the nineteenth century after being left dilapidated for over a century. The castle was nationalized in 1944 when the Draskovic family emigrated to Austria. The romanticist pleasure grounds contain a lake and nature trails.

The town of Trakoscan is on the bank on the Bednja River in the Hrvatsko Zagorje region at an elevation of 250 meters. The main occupations of the locals are farming, viticulture, tourism, and livestock breeding. The Trakoscan Lake was created in the nineteenth century and it has a dam at one end. It has a length of 1.5 kilometers and you can swim in it during the summer or ice skate in winter. The lake and the surrounding forest are protected as an important landscape since the year 1955. The forest mainly consists of beech and pine but is interspersed with wood rush and durmast oak.
