Croatia Velika Gorica Travel Tourism Guide - Velika Gorica is sixteen kilometers south of Zagreb and was first mentioned under the town’s other name, Gorica, in 1228. The town was chartered in 1242 by the King, Bela IV. The archaeology in this area dates back to the prehistoric times. The Turopoljski Grad, which is situated in the town’s center, dates from 1765 and was once the seat of the Noble Municipalities of Turopolje. This building is now the museum of Turopolje and was founded in 1960. The museum houses collections of archaeological, historical and ethnographical interest. Many Roman graves have been found in the local area and also some medieval artifacts.

Velika Gorica is near to the hills of Vukomericke Gorice. The old ‘Turkish Common oak is protected here as a monument of nature. The Cice Lake is popular for water activities such as swimming and water skiing. The main airport for Zagreb, Pleso, is nearby.

Nearby to Velica Gorica are the rivers of Lomnica, Odra and Sava. The local area here is good for hunters and anglers. The main occupations of the locals here are woodworking, food processing, leather crafting and printing presses. Velika Gorica has won an award for being the second most beautiful city in Europe.
