A notable archaeological site near to Vukovar is Vucedol, known for its prehistoric culture. Vukovar itself has been habited since the tenth century and the town became the centre of the county in the middle ages. It was first mentioned in documents in 1220 and developed as a three part settlement. The Eltz family manor or castle was built between 1749 and 1751. The building is now the Vukovar city museum. The town has many baroque buildings and a prominent three story Franciscan monastery built in 1723. The population increased dramatically after 1948 due to industrial development

Vukovar became severely damaged during the Croatian war of Independence. In 1991 within 100 days, 800,000 grenades and bombs fell on the town. Vukovar is now seen as a hero’s town.

Vukovar is at the confluence where the Vuka River runs into the Danube and its name means the town on the river. Vukovar is at an elevation of 108 meters and is the largest Croatian town. The main occupations of the inhabitants are trade, farming, viticulture, textile industry, and tourism. Angling is very popular on the rivers for catfish, perch, carp, and pike.
