Croatia Zagreb Travel Tourism Guide - The capital city of Zagreb is located near the geographical junction of the horseshoe shaped nation of Croatia. Situated between the countries of Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, it is a natural place to visit on a tour of the Balkan section of Eastern Europe.

Zagreb is the capital city of Croatia and it is a very old Central European city. Zagreb is frequently nicknamed the city of museums, as there are 21 museums within the capital. The city sits near to the Sava River and the Medvednica mountains, and is at an altitude of 122 meters above sea level. The city has a population of 780,000.

The city of Zagreb is divided into three parts. Old Gornji grad is the upper part of the town and contains the Presidential Palace Banski Dovri, the Croatian parliament Sabor and the church of St Mark's. The cobbled streets in this part are lit by gas lamps. Donji grad is the lower part of the town and contains most of the shops, cafes, and theatres. Novi Zagreb is the newest part of town and contains mainly high rise buildings.

The city has grown from two medieval settlements that were located on adjoining hills. Historical records first mention the city in 1064 when the diocese was founded on Kaptol. These settlements used to be surrounded by walls and towers, remains of which still survive. Zagreb became an important fortress against the Turks between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries.

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, much of the town was reconstructed in the Baroque style and new palaces and churches were built. Many wealthy people moved into the city and the city outgrew its medieval quarters. There was a bad earthquake in 1880 and more reconstruction and modernization occurred. Trams started running through the city in 1891, drawn by horses and became run by electric in 1905. The city became a capital after Croatian independence in 1990.

Zagreb has a continental climate. The name Zagreb comes from the Croatian word 'zagrabiti' that means taking something with your hand or an object. There are many legends about the origins of the name. Zagreb is an important international trade and business centre. Many of the town's inhabitants are employed in chemical, textile, pharmaceutical, and food processing. There are many high rise buildings that are under construction within the city.

There is a lot to see and do in Zagreb. There are many museums and galleries as well as frequent festivals and events held in the city. The town experiences a lot of congress tourism with frequent business fairs and events. The city has plenty of recreational centers and a large stadium. There are excursion tours available for sighting within the city and the neighboring surroundings.

A unique offer in the city is the Zagreb Card. Created by the Zagreb Tourist Board, this card can be a boon to the visitor to this historic city. The card is available on line or at many locations throughout the Metropolitan Area. The Zagreb Card can provide discount admission to many of the cities museums and other attractions, as well as price breaks at various local hotels and restaurants. It is also good for unlimited travel on the cities public transportation system. At a price of around 12 Euro, it is a three day pass to a more enjoyable stay in the Croatian capital.
