Croatia Ciovo Island Travel Tourism Guide - Ciovo Island is in the Central Dalmatian archipelago and has an area of 28.8 square kilometers. It is two kilometers from Cape Marjan on its southeastern part and is connected to the mainland by a bascule bridge in Trogir. The island encloses the Kastela gulf. Ciovo has around 6000 inhabitants and the highest peak is Rudine at 218 meters. There are several villages, hamlets and part of the town of Trogir on the island.

The island has been inhabited since the prehistoric age and it used to be called Boa, which has Illiric roots. In the middle ages, lepers used to be housed here. The Dominican monastery of the Holy Cross was founded in the fifteenth century. The Franciscan monastery of St. Anthony has a famous painting and sculpture. Refugees fled to Ciovo Island from the Turks in the fifteenth century. Traces of the Church of St Peter, which dates as pre-Romanesque have been found near Slaline. There is a preserved medieval church of St. Maurice in Zedno.

The coastline has many sandy and pebble beaches. The island’s vegetation comprises of mainly underbrush. There are pine trees and Cypress here. Other trees include the Holm Oak, Juniper and Myrtle. The main crops are olives, grapes, figs, vines, almonds, citrus fruit and medicinal herbs. In the south there are cliffs, of which some are 150 meters high. Ciovo Island has no surface water or streams. There is some brackish water.
