Croatia Cres Island Travel Tourism Guide - This neighbor to the Island of Krk is the second largest of the Adriatic Island. Located in the Kvarner in the Istrian Peninsula, it is a popular vacation spot in the Northern Adriatic Sea. In actual fact, Cres Island is slightly larger in land mass than Krk, but Krk is still considered the larger of the two by the Croatian population.

It's sister island, Losinj Island, was once a part of the main body until separated by a channel by engineers of the Roman Empire during their occupation of Cres. You can still travel to Losinj from Cres over a trestle bridge.

Near the center of the island is Lake Vrana. Since this is the sole source of fresh water for Cres, it is fiercely protected by the local authorities. Swimming, fishing and other recreation activities are strictly prohibited.

However, with easy access the Adriatic and the rest of the Mediterranean, there are many other was to enjoy the water and the sun. The island has many beaches, located mostly on the western, seaward side. Sailing, boat tours and charters are also available.
The island history dates back many hundreds, even thousands of years. It was used by various groups of people during the Neolithic and Post Neolithic periods, the the first permanent settlers were members of the Liburnian-Illyrian tribes from the mainland. It was also home to some groups of Greek sailors.

Owing to it's proximity to the Northern Italian Panhandle, Cres was a part the Roman Empire, whose influence was felt throughout the Istrian Peninsula during first, second and third centuries. During this time, the island became known as by it's Latin name, 'Res Publica Crepsa'.
There are many structures and artifacts remaining on the island that date back to the Roman era. The most spectacular of these are the 'gromacas', as series of stone terraces on the Hill of St. Bartholomew. These terraces are constructed from short walls made without mortar from carefully fitted stones. These artifacts have been preserved with great care and with great effort over the centuries by the people of Cres.

After the Empires collapse, Croats form the mainland ventured out to the island and settled there. Their decedents still account for the majority of the native Cres population.
Control of the island was also to change many times in the ensuing years. Cres was at one time part of two additional empires, the Venetian and the Byzantine.
A remnant from the Venetian era exists in the museum that was once the house of the noble Petris family. This example of Gothic-Venetian architecture was also the birthplace Franciscus Patritius, a well known sixteenth century philosopher.

Cres is not only dedicated to the preservation of their history but their natural history as well. The island is a home to the endangered Griffin Vulture, which is carefully protected and nurtured. It's beautiful forests and fields are open for public enjoyment but are carefully guarded by local officials.

Though only about 400 square kilometers is size, this resort island is packed with places to go and things to do.
There are many small cities on the island, ranging from Martinscica, a seaside town with a large vacation resort, to Valun, a tiny town in which travel by automobile is prohibited.
The mountain village of Lubenice gives you a great place to view the neighboring Istrian islands and Stivan, with a permanent population of less than 20 people, has church worth visiting.
The main town of the island is Cres. The largest city on the island, it is also the most metropolitan. It is filled with shops and restaurants, and is the the center of the island life.

A variety of churches and other historic structures survive and are preserved on the island, stunning examples of architectural styles ranging from Roman to Autrio-Hungarian.
