Croatia - Dugi Otok Travel Tourism Guide

 
This island was known by many names throughout history. Constantine Porphyrogenitus in the tenth century called the island Pizuh, which is preserved in the name of the town of Cuh. The Telascica Bay derives it's name from a Insula Tilagus, a twelfth century reference to Dugi Otok.

Settled mostly by Croats and Slavs, a significant Italian element was introduced into the population during the it's time under the Venetian Empire.

The higher peaks of the island show the remains of some early Illyrian settlements, complete with fortifications and grave mounds.

Portions of a large Roman mansion can still be seen on the isthmus of Mala Proversa.
The Croats settled the island after Roman influence wained, and their heritage remains in the form of many small churches and houses built with the mortar less techniques of the time.

 
The southern part of the island is dedicated to Telascica nature park and the adjacent Kornati national park. This is also a favorite area for divers who visit the island.

Many people visit the caves that are located throughout the island with colorful names like Oven of Horrors, Goat's Oven, and the Great Vat. One of the favorite tourist sites of Dugi Otok is the lighthouse at the Village of Veli Rat.

This structure, built in 1849, is not only an example of a working lighthouse, but also has two apartments available for island guests. Food and other essentials are supplied by the the shops in Veli Rat.

The island is a perfect haven for water sport enthusiasts. It is considered by many to have some of the best beaches in Croatia. The beach types vary widely across the island. Sali is home to rocky beaches while the Saharun beaches to the north have a fine, white sand. Some of the best beaches have no easy inland access and require a boat to visit.

The numerous bays and capes make sailing, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving a dream. The town of Brbinj in Brbinj Bay is a popular spot for the water enthusiast.

To combine resort living with small town charm, you can visit Bozava. The town itself consists of two shops, a post office, four restaurants and a safety services station. However, nearby and hidden a pine woods is a major hotel facility, a perfect place to make your stay on the island.

Bike and hiking trails are available throughout the island, especially in the parks to the south.

For a quiet time, the fishing village of Sali with quiet beaches and quaint shops is a great spot for the traveler to visit.

Dugi Otok is normally accessed by ferry service from Zadar. However, since the ride is over an hour, it may not be the best destination for a day tripper.
