Croatia Ilovik Island Travel Tourism Guide - Ilovik Island is in the Losinj archipelago. The only village on Ilovik Island is called Ilovik. The island has an area of 5.8 square kilometers. Ilovik has many secluded bays and the largest bay, which has a sandy beach, is called Paizine. There is another island close by to Ilovik called Sveti Petar and a strait called Ilovacka varta that is 2.5 kilometers long, separates them.

The first inhabitants of the island were the Illirian tribes. There are many Roman remains such as mosaics, a burial sarcophagus and an underwater archaeological site. The walls enclosing the cemetery on Sveti Petar, date back to the 11th century and they are part of the Benedictine monastery, Sanctus Petrus de Nembis. Also on Sveti Petar there are castle remains. The castle was built in 1600 by Filippo Pasqualigo, who erected this building to defend the area against pirates. The first Croats arrived here in the eighteenth century. The oldest recorded name of the island is Neumae Insulae, in AD 1071. The village of Ilovit developed only 200 years ago when farmers arrived from Veli Losinj. On Straza hill there are traces of a prehistoric castle and a medieval Byzantine lookout. The archaeological site Sicadriga contains the ruins of a medieval church, St Andrew.

You can reach Ilovik Island by ship from either Mali Losinj or Rijeka. The island has Mediterranean vegetation and there are many flowers here such as oleanders and roses, which is why the island has the nickname ‘the island of flowers’. There are many palm trees and two 100 years old eucalyptus trees. Sveti Petar has several olive trees on the island. Ilovik Island is hilly. On the western side is Kristine peak at 97 meters, in the centre is Did at 92 meters and on the eastern side is Vela Straza at 91 meters.

There are 100 people living on the island and their main occupations are fishing, tourism, sheep herding and agriculture. There is a famous tavern that sells American specialties and the harbour is 1.5 kilometers long.
