Croatia Jabuka Island Travel Tourism Guide - Jabuka Island is 70 kilometers northwest of Vis Island and is a 97 meters high large, steep cliff that is in the shape of a pyramid. Jabuka rises almost vertically out of the sea and the island is of volcanic origin. Weapons and tools were made here out of the volcanic rocks.

The island is exposed to strong winds. The seas around Jabuka are rich in fish such as tuna and also lobsters. You can swim around the island in thirty minutes. Magnetite is found in the black volcanic rocks that are on the island. Compasses are rendered useless here and it is very rare to spot other boats in the area. The shoreline of Jabuka is not suitable for docking and is uninhabited. You should only visit the island in the summer months with an experienced crew.

There are only two endemic species on Jabuka Island due to the harsh climate, which are the Black lizard and the plant Centaurea. The Black lizard likes to sun itself on the warm black granite stones. Over 50 years ago the island used to be the home to a type of endemic type of carnation that became extinct. The water around Jabuka is 1300 meters deep.

 

Jabuka is Apple in Croatian, a direct translation of Jabuka Island to English would be Apple Island.
