Croatia Kaprije Island Travel Tourism Guide - Kaprije Island is in the Adriatic Sea in the central part of the Sibenik archipelago. The island’s area is 9.67 square meters and there are around 100 people living on the island.

The island is named after the plant kapera or caper bush, the buds are used as spices in cooking. In 1500 the island was owned by an aristocratic family called Divnic and then in the nineteenth century owned by another important family called Ljubic who were from Sibenik. After 1510 refugees fled to the island from the mainland away from the Turks. St Peter’s church in the village dates from between the 16th and 17th century, and was extended in 1801.

The island has many hills; the highest is Velika glavica at 132 meters above sea level and the summit offers excellent views of the neighboring islands. The island’s vegetation comprises of grasses, bushes and the occasional pine forest. There are small fields at the foot of the hills with olives and grapes growing. The island has one sandy beach and a footpath leading from one side of the island to the other. The cove of Kaprije is beautiful at sunset with the boats masts twinkling in the dusk.

You can get a ferry from Sibenik to the island, which takes around an hour. There is only one village on the island and no roads or cars so you need to leave your car in Sibenik. There is a small hamlet that is occasionally populated by the Murter residents. The island’s inhabitants’ chief occupations are fishing and tourism.
Kaprije is a popular stopover to pick up supplies for the yachtsmen on the way to the Kornati Islands. The island has local amenities such as a store and restaurants.
