Croatia Kolocep-Kalamota Island Travel Tourism Guide - Kolocep is also known as the isle of knowledge and is called Kalamota by the locals. The island is 1 kilometer from the closest land and has an area of 2.3 square kilometers. It is one of the three inhabited Elphati Islands that are inhabited and is Croatia’s southernmost inhabited island. There is an institution set up to protect Kolocep’s culture, fishing, food ways and the island’s other important aspects.

There are seven ninth to eleventh century churches that are pre-Romanesque on Kolocep Island. In 1448, the island had its own rector, and became a summer retreat for Dubrovnik’s gentry in the fifteenth century when many sacral buildings and manors were built. During the Dubrovnik republic, Kolocep was an important shipbuilding site. Two members of Christopher Columbus’s crew on the Santa Maria came from Kolocep. Many archaeological remnants have been found here. Between the fourteenth and eighteenth century, coral diving was an important industry for the islanders. In the sixteenth century the island was attacked by the Turks and became fortified with defensive towers.

Kolocep has two villages. Donje Celo is in the north and Gornje Celo in the southeast. In Donje Celo there are remains of some early Christian chapels. Kolocep has 150 inhabitants and goat herding is still practiced here. You can reach Kolocep by boat from Dubrovnik and takes about half an hours ride, there are no cars on the island. Lopud Island is nearby. Kolocep is made up of limestone and subtropical vegetation consisting of tall pine trees, cypresses, grapes, figs, lemons, cactus, olive groves, aloe, and palm trees.

There are many footpaths on the island. You can find plenty of old churches, ruins and architectural monuments on your wanders around the island. You can also go mountain biking, scuba diving and fishing on Kolocep. It is possible to take a historical tour around the island, which explains the island’s 2000 years history. The island has some beautiful steep cliffs and hidden crystal blue caves, one of which is a main attraction on the island on the western side. The island has two limestone ridges, which have a valley between them. There are no surface water streams.
