Croatia Lokrum Island Travel Tourism Guide - Lokrum Island is only a short ferry ride southeast from Dubrovnik. Lokrum means sour fruit and the island is also known as the island of kings. The island is currently uninhabited. The Austrian archduke Maximilan built a holiday home here in 1859, along with magnificent gardens. The palace has been partially restored and is now a restaurant and café bar.

The Benedictine abbey and monastery were founded in 1023, and absolved in 1798. The botanical garden was founded in 1959. It has endemic tropic and subtropical vegetation consisting of over 800 species of plants from all over the world such as Australia and Africa. Lokrum Island became a nature reserve in 1964 and a special forest vegetation reserve in 1976. Lokrum is said to be where Richard the Lionheart became shipwrecked on his route home from the Crusades in 1190. He vowed to have a church built on the island as thanksgiving. There is a star shaped Napoleonic fortress called Fort Royale, built by the French in 1806 on the highest peak at 91 meters, which looks out over the island.

Families of peacocks inhabit the island, roaming the monastery and botanical garden grounds. The island is covered in pine forests, 20 meters high 1000 year old Holm oaks, manna ashes, and has rocky beaches on its coastline. There are many footpaths across Lokrum Island. A small lake called Mrtvo More or ‘dead sea’ is linked to the sea by a saltwater channel and is ideal for children to paddle in.
