Croatia Lopud Island Travel Tourism Guide - Lopud Island is the second largest of the Elphati Islands with an area of 4.63 square kilometres and a population of 220. It is located between the islands of Kolocep and Sipan. The island has often been called Insula Media, which means ‘middle island’. You can reach the island by boat from Dubrovnik, Orasac and Zaton. There are no cars on the island. A conservational project is currently being implemented to protect the island’s art and cultural heritage. The name Lopud comes from the Romanic name Lafota.

The Franciscan monastery, which dates from 1483, has a cloister, walls, defense tower and contains some valuable paintings. Remains of Illiric settlements have been found on the site of the current Spanjola fort and also Greek artifacts. The bell tower of St John’s church was used for warning inhabitants of danger. In 1457, the island became the regional headquarters of the Republic of Dubrovnik and there used to be 1000 inhabitants. Lopud used to have its own shipyard and fleet of eighty ships. There has been a total of 24 churches built on the island. Lopud was one of the most developed economically islands of the Elphatis and has been known as a seaside resort for more than a century.

The island has two parallel hills, which are connected by a dolomite valley. Lopud bay is at one end of the valley and Sunj at the other. You can reach the cove of Sunj beach, which has fine white sand and is one of the best in the Dubrovnik region, by following a one kilometer pathway. Sunj has an interesting cemetery and is overlooked by the church of Our Lady of Sunj. The steep north-eastern part of the island is inaccessible and the highest point of Lopud is Polacica at 216 meters, which has the ruins of a castle on the summit. Lopud Island has 1.2 kilometers of sandy beaches and the settlement of Lopud was constructed around the bay with a stone promenade. The island is covered in Mediterranean vegetation.
You can go walking, cycling, snorkeling and kayaking on the island. The island has many orange and lemon groves, as well as palm, pine and cypress trees. There is a park called Djordjic Mayneri, a former nineteenth century villa’s garden, which has an arboretum that has subtropical vegetation and tropic plants within it. There are stone lions within the park.
