Croatia Molat Island Travel Tourism Guide - Molat Island is in north Dalmatia and is situated in the northern part of the Zadar archipelago. Molat is southeast of the island Ist and is separated by the Zapundel strait.

In 1151 the island became the property of the Zadar based Benedictine monastery of St Krseven. In 1409 the island came under the power of Venice who then leased it to Zadar families. King Edward VIII along with Wallis Simpson, visited Molat Island during his Adriatic cruise in 1939. During the period of 1941 to 1943, the island was an Italian concentration camp.

The island is covered with marquis and pine forests. It is said to be an ideal destination for hermits and those that love walking through Mediterranean vegetation. Molat Island’s bays are also a frequent destination for sailors. The island has an area of 28 square meters and a population of around 220.

The island is made of lower cretaceous rocks and ecocene limestone. Molat has a relief that is characterized by two limestone ridges and the Zapunal-Brgulje valley separates these. The highest peak on the island is Knizak with a height of 142 meters. The north-eastern coast is low with most of the coves but the south-western side is quite steep. The island has numerous coves, bays and natural beaches. All are accessible on foot and are perfect for children.

There are three villages on the island: Molat, Brgulje and Zapuntal. The chief occupations of the island’s inhabitants are tourism, fishing, farming and breeding of sheep. There are only four restaurants and three shops on the island. It is considered a paradise for water sports, fishing and sailing.
