Croatia Murter Island Travel Tourism Guide - The town of Murter is the oldest and largest on the island. It is often referred to as the capital of ‘Kornati’. There are archaeological remains of the old Roman town of Colentum, which is located on Gradina hill and constructed in the first century. Murter has several seventeenth century churches.

Betina was built on the slopes of the Cape Artic. The town is overlooked by a 1736 bell tower of the parish church of St Francis of Assisi, built by Ivan Skok from Sibenik. Betina is famous for its ship builders.

Tisno is the newest town on the island of Murter and it is named after the narrow strait between the island and the mainland. Tisno is well known for its big feast of Our Lady of Caravaggio that is held every year.

Jezera is the smallest town on the island and was named after the large pools of water that flow into the valley during the autumn and winter. These ‘lakes’ disappear during the spring and summer. The first settlers came to the area in 1298 and Jezera today resembles a typical fishing village.

Many tourists visit the nearby Kornati National Park from Murter Island. The limestone part of the island is covered with sparse vegetation and the mainly steep south-western coast is indented by small coves. The local residents are also known as Kurnator because they own most of the islands in the Kornati National Park. Murter Island is a popular centre for sailing, scuba diving and wind surfing. The local inhabitants work in fishing, tourism, viticulture and faming.

Murter is one of the north Dalmatian islands in the Sibenik archipelago. The island has fantastic sandy and gravel beaches, beautiful architecture, olive and fig tree fields. The island is connected to the mainland by a bascule bridge in the village of Tisno. Murter Island has 4 towns, Murter, Jezera, Tisno and Betina. The highest peak on Murter Island is Raduc, which is 125 meters high. The island has an area of 18 600 000 square meters and the population is around 5000.
