Croatia Pag Island Travel Tourism Guide - Pag Island is in the Northern Adriatic and is the fifth largest of the islands off the Croatian coast and the third largest of the islands in the Kvarner bay. Though not the largest in land mass, it does feature the longest coastline of any of the Croatian islands, making it a perfect vacation stop for the Mediterranean traveler.

Long and narrow, Pag's geography changes from steep to the North and lowlands to the South. Pag is part of a group of islands known as the Dalmatian Archipelago, and it figures prominently in the history of the Dalmatian region of Croatia.

Though not as green as it's northern sister, Rab, the Island of Pag is not without it's local agriculture. The Lun peninsula in the northern section of the island is heavily planted with olives. Local produce are grown in the valleys dotted along the length of the island.

A local cheese, "Paski Sir", made from sheep's milk is well known in the European community. Pag is also well known for it's lace, created by local artisans.

Visitors to the island will enjoy the miles of beautiful beaches and the historically preserved Pag town.  The sixty kilometer (roughly forty mile) long island is serviced by a single main road that connects the various communities.
Early settlers to this island were the Liburnians, one of may Illyrian tribes that were found in north eastern Croatia and the Istrian peninsula. Ruins of one of their forts can still be seen near the town of Kolan.

Examples of a Bronze age tumulus (or burial mound) can be seen between the towns of Kosljun and Simun.

The Romans settled in the area in the first century, and built several fortifications to protect their settlements form the Illyrian tribes.

After the fall of Rome, the island was settled by the Croats, whose population centered around the town of Kesa. Part of Kesa still exists within the present day town of Novalija.

During the middle ages, the ruling king split the island, giving ownership of the northern portions to the Church on the neighboring island of Rab, and the southern portion to the Croatian coastal city of Zadar. Clashes between Rab and Zadar were often fought on Pag.

Near the end of the twelfth century, the capital of Kesa collapsed and the older city of Pag came into prominence. In the fifteenth century, the island was sold to the Venetian Empire, which controlled Pag for nearly four hundred years.

Like most of the Dalmatian Islands, Pag was under the rule of the Austrian empire for many years until the political re-alignments following World War II, when it was annexed in 1945 by Croatia.

This rocky island is connected to the mainland via the Pag Bridge from the Croatian mainland at Cape Osjak, which is drivable year round. Pag is also served by regular ferry service. However, in the winter months, strong northern winds can interrupt the ferry schedule.
