Croatia Palagruza Island Travel Tourism Guide - Palagruza Island is Croatia’s furthest island. It is 1400 meters long, 300 meters wide and the highest point is the lighthouse at 90 meters high. The island is covered in Mediterranean vegetation and is a nature reserve because there are numerous endemic species of flora and fauna here. Palagruza has a famous southern golden beach.

There is an archaeological site called Palagruza Velika. Earliest inhabitants were thought to be from the sixth century as there is evidence of early Neolithic ceramic fragments. Palagruza is said to be the island of the Greek hero Diomedes and his final resting place. Pope Alexander III stopped here on the island in 1177. In 1914 the Italians occupied the undefended island, which was then called Polagosa and they thus stationed some submarines here. Italy held onto the island until world war two was settled.

The lighthouse was built in 1875, it was switched on for the first time on the 20th of September 1876, and it is the largest lighthouse in the Adriatic. Henry Epoulte who was from Paris made the light machine in 1873. The lighthouse houses a small archaeological collection. This lighthouse is one of three in the Adriatic that has a thermometer shelter. The bottom part of the lighthouse is made from Palagruza’s stone and the rest from a lighter stone brought from the island of Brac. The lighthouse is also the oldest manned in the Adriatic.

The island has two well kept trails. There is no drinking water here, instead the lighthouse collects rainwater. There are 220 flora species on Palagruza and 120 fauna species, many of which are endemic. The island has bushes of handels, oleanders, wormwood and the dangerous to touch wolf-milk bushes. The Mediterranean Monk Seal has been sighted from the lighthouse. You can arrange to stay in the lighthouse.
