Croatia Prvic Island Travel Tourism Guide - Prvic Island is half a mile away from the mainland and is the closest of all the Dalmatian islands in the Sibenik archipelago. Prvic is a natural extension of the island of Zlarin and has an area of 2.37 square kilometers.

The island was populated in the middle ages and its name derives from Pivicia or Prvina, which translates as a name for the God of Spring by the first Croats. Prvic grew further in the fifteenth century when refugees fled from the Turks on the mainland. The first settlement was Luka and after that Sepurine, now the largest settlement on the island. The Croatian friars of the monastic order of St Francis came to Luka in 1461 and built St Mary’s church along with the monastery. The monastery was destroyed by fire but was rebuilt in 1884. Francis Faust, who invented the flying man parachute and the five language dictionary, is buried in Luka.

Sepurine is on the southwest side on the island. The church of St Rocks was built close to the seafront and was completed in 1620. It has many baroque ornaments. The new church of Our Lady was built in 1878, and the oldest church dates from 1479 and was recently restored in 1878. The house called Mirina is one of the oldest buildings in Sepurine, and holds a collection of old local items and photographs. There is an old ninth or tenth century cemetery here.
The former inhabitants of the island used to work in agriculture and cattle breeding. Today most work in Sibenik but a few cultivate figs, grapes, olives and fish. Prvic Island is very much a tourist destination and is easily reachable by ferry from Sibenik and Vodice. There are many sunny beaches and Mediterranean pine forests. The island is also popular for its stone houses that were built along the sea front. There are good views over the archipelago.

There are no cars on the island but you can follow many pleasant walkways across the island. Prvic has numerous festivities that are held during the summer months. You can go diving in the Prvic tunnel.
