Croatia Rab Island Travel Tourism Guide - Nestled in the South Eastern corner of the Bay of Kvarner, this Adriatic Island is famous for beautiful beaches. charming small town living and historical churches.

Rab is one of a series of Islands off the coast of Croatia in the northern Adriatic Sea.

Protected by the Island of Cres to the west and the Island of Krk to the north, Rab is a haven for those who love the sea. It's natural harbors and miles of beaches provide endless opportunities for sea lovers to enjoy themselves.

The island is virtually surrounded by beautiful, sandy beaches, while the interior is heavily forested. Tiny towns filled with medieval charm dot the landscape form one end of the island to the other. The island has over 300 freshwater springs, making it one of the greenest of the Adriatic islands.

Gentle temperatures year round and some of the cleanest water in the entire Mediterranean basin make this a choice vacation spot. Accommodations are not limited to hotels. Many private homes are open to multi-week rentals for those wishing to make Rab the center of their vacation adventures.
The town of Rab, the primary community on the island, a tightly packed urban setting that appears from the sea to look like a giant ship, with it's four ancient church spires appearing as masts in the distance. Sites to see in the town include the Bell Tower of St. Maria and Palace of Nimira.

The Lopar peninsula on the north east corner of the island is the most isolated corner of Rab. It is surrounded by sandy beaches intermixed with lush forest, a perfect spot for the nature lover to spend a day.
The town of Kempor exists as an example of the old time fisherman's village. Fresh fish and produce from the surrounding fields are available for sale.

Supetarska Draga is perhaps the most peaceful place on the island. Situated on a protected cove and surrounded by fresh water springs and lush fields, it is a great place to site and enjoy the quiet beauty of the island.

At less than ninety four square kilometers, this qualifies as one of the medium sized Adriatic Islands, but it is packed with things to do and see.

Inhabited since before the Roman Empire, the Island of Rab has had many rulers and many influences in it's history. Each era is reflected in the architecture of the towns.
Some of the original Roman walls that once surrounded the town of Rab have been reconstructed.

A new addition to the cultural landscape of Rab is the Fjera, a festival celebrating the medieval history of the island. A recreation of a fourteenth century tradition, the festival features a crossbow competition, using an ancient form of the weapon that is only found in one other part of the world. The festival has grown in recent years to include other medieval elements, including costumes, food and traditional medieval crafts. Life on Rab in the fourteenth century is depicted by locals in various exhibitions. Visitors are encouraged to don costumes and join in the fun.

Getting to the Island of Rab is easy with reliable ferry service from the nearby Croatian mainland. The closet Airport is on the Island of Krk, immediately to the north of Rab. Direct bus service is available to Rab from the international airport in the Croatian capital city of Zagreb.
