Croatia Solta Island Travel Tourism Guide - Solta is an island in the middle of the Dalmatian archipelago and it is separated from the mainland by the Split channel. Solta is 58.9 square kilometers and has a population of 1500 people. The island has a Mediterranean climate and is the thirteenth largest Croatian island. Solta Island is made up of sedimentary rocks and limestone. There are two faults on the island.

The island used to be called Solynthia and this was pronounced as Soluta. The Romans changed the island’s name to Solta. When the Croats first came to the island in the second century, they called it Sulet.

The island has prehistoric remains at Gradac and Roman sites. The island was attacked several times during the middle ages. There are medieval monuments on the island, which include a Benedictine monastery. Grahote is the oldest and largest village on the island. The village of Gornje Selo at the foot of Vela Straza has many examples of medieval architecture. In the graveyard at Gornje Selo there is a grave, which is for every traveler that dies on the island, and it has an inscription that reads ‘for travelers’. Maslinica is the castle of the Marchi family who lived here on the island from 1706.

The highest peak is Vela Straza at 237 meters, which has a large crucifix upon it. There is a large fifteen square kilometer karst field on the island, which is cultivated with various crops. The largest coves on the island are Rogac and Necujam on the north-eastern coast. There are 4 harbours and 24 bays, which prove popular with boaters. Rogac is the main port of the island and the oldest coastal village, which has Roman remains.
The chief occupations of the islanders are: farming, tourism, fishing, wine production, olive and fruit growing. Solta has dozens of types of herbs growing on the island and Solta’s honey is made up of self-grown rosemary, which is the one of the most famous honeys in Europe.

There are 105 species of birds on the island. The Screech Owl is the symbol of Solta Island. The most common mammal is the hare. Keep an eye out for the Mediterranean Monk Seal and Dolphins along the coast.

Best place to eat and drink is the "SISMIS-BAR" in the bay Sesula. Excellent food, cocktails, music and a wonderful view!
