Croatia Susak Island Travel Tourism Guide - Susak Island is also known as Sansego because it used to be under Italian rule and thus named Sansego. The native islanders are called Sujcani and they speak an archaic language called Susacki. Susak is primarily made of sand that lies on top of a limestone base. The island is of four square kilometers and is unique to the Adriatic Sea. The island is located in Kvarner Bay and is part of the Cres-Losinj archipelago.

The island has been habited continuously since the Roman period. The Benedictine Abbey of St Nicholas dates from the eleventh century. The church has a twelfth century crucifix called “Great God” and has the remnants of a medieval building that is built into the outer wall. The people who live on the island have retained their customs and folk costume. Susak has the only national costume where women wear an outfit, which shows their legs above the knees. Susak’s lifestyles, speech, dress and agriculture have not changed for over 500 years. The islanders even make their own clothes and their wine is the only export out of the island.

The island has many bamboos, vineyards planted on terraces that produce excellent wine, sheep and goats. There is under 200 people now living on the island. Many couples come here to the island to get married. The highest point on the island is the 96 meters high Garba, on which a lighthouse stands. The now automated lighthouse guides ships through the channels to the city ports such as Venice.
The island only has pathways around it. There are no roads or automobiles because of the risk of erosion because of the sand. There is an 11 kilometer walk around the island and you can stop off to enjoy a swim in the sea. Susak has the only sand beach on all of the Croatian islands, which makes it very popular with the tourists. There is no running water on the island. You can catch a catamaran or a ship from Mali Losinj or Rijeka to the Susak Island.
