Croatia Ugljan Island Travel Tourism Guide - Ugljan is the closest island in the Zadar archipelago to the mainland and is opposite the town of Zadar, which is only a couple of miles away. Ugljan is also known as the green island as it is covered in Mediterranean vegetation. It has an area of 51.85 square kilometers and the shoreline measures 74 kilometers. The island’s population is 7,500 and is one of the most densely populated Croatian islands. The island is connected to Pasman Island by a bridge over the Zdrelac strait.

The island was first mentioned in 1325 but since the Neolithic period has been continuously lived on. Ugljan has plenty of Roman remains. The present settlements date from the Middle Ages. There is a Venetian fort called St. Michael, which is at 265 meters and has great views, that dates from the thirteenth century. The island has some roman remains, ancient Croatian churches and convents. Lukerian village has a summer castle that belonged to the de Ponte family and dates from the seventeenth century. Suromiscicia is famous for its pomegranate bushes and has a baroque summer castle, once owned by the Lantana family and is also seventeenth century. Poljana has a thirteenth century church. The village Preko has a lot of Dalmatian architecture, a fifteenth century Franciscan convent and the eleventh century Romanic church of St John. There is a baroque church of St Lawrence in Kali, and in Kukljica is the fifteenth century church of St Hieronymous. Ugljan Island has a festival of Our Lady of the Snow.
Ugljan is the biggest town and has 1070 inhabitants. The ancient Franciscan monastery dates from 1430 and has a gothic church from 1447. There is a Roman villa in the cove of Batalaza and prehistoric ruins on the hill of Kuran. The islanders’ main occupations are sailing and fishing. Some grow spices and herbs. All the settlements are on the cultivated eastern side of the island.

The island has dense bushes, pine trees, vineyards and olive groves. Ugljan is a rocky island covered in macchia on the limestone part and on the dolomite is farmland. There are many numbered paths for walkers and 5 dedicated cycling routes. Ugljan Island has a scuba diving school. You can go hunting for hares and pheasants during the season. Ugljan is nearby to the national parks and you can take excursions to visit them.
