Croatia Vir Island Travel Tourism Guide - Vir Island is 25 kilometers north of Zadar and it has an area of 22.38 square kilometers. There is also a small islet nearby called Skoljic that is covered in pine forests and has a long sandy beach. Vir Island has sandy and pebbly beaches that are perfect for families with pine forests right up to the edge. There are also numerous bays and inlets with piers. The Dalmatian island has a bridge to the mainland that was built in 1976 and it is the 20th largest island in the Adriatic. Vir Island is also commonly known as the ‘island of contrasts’ because of the number of resort houses, and tourists staying here.

The island was first thought to be inhabited by the Illyrian tribe Liburni who left behind their settlements at Sv. Juray, Bandira and Gradina. The first historical records, the Charter of the Croatian King Petar Kresimir IV, date back to 1069. In this document, the island was known as Ueru or Veru, which is thought to mean pasture. The Italians referred to the island as ‘Puneta Dura’. There are remains of a historic Venetian seventeenth century castle or citadel called Kastelina. Past excavations on the island have discovered a small pre-Romanesque church of St Nicholas. There is a Romanesque church of St John that dates from the twelfth and thirteenth century.
Bandira is the highest point on the island at 112 meters and offers breath taking views of the surrounding islands and the Velebit mountain range. There are a range of activities that you can enjoy on the island, such as bathing, surfing, hiking, sailing and mountain biking. Vir Island has many pastures, meadowlands, karstic hills, bare rocks, pine trees, and cultivations of figs and olives. There is said to be peloid mud here that cures rheumatic symptoms. Most of the islands inhabitants sail.
