Croatia Vis Island Travel Tourism Guide - The Island of Vis has a panoramic view of the Adriatic Sea with water all around you with the inviting blue sea at your side no matter where you decide to stay. Vis is popular for the fishing excursions and the beautiful beaches with a warm sunny climate. The location provides for scuba driving to explore the sunken treasures around the island of Vis.

The Island of Vis is located in the Adriatic Sea. The sunken ships of Vis are located just off the shore and can be seen during scuba driving excursions. The secluded beaches of Vis are peaceful as you enjoy the blue transparent sea. The island of Vis as a city name after it and Vis has the highest peak called Hum. The two cities on Vis are Vis and Komiza, which are located on the shoreline of Vis. The population of Vis has been said to be fewer than five thousand people. Other little villages are Zemlje, Podstrazje, Podselje, Marinje and Podspilje.

The Adriatic Sea around the island of Vis provides for the economy being high in fishing because of the sardines, mackerels and anchovy. Tourism is what keeps the island of Vis alive other than the fishing Vis is not populated for agriculture other than that. Because Vis is located in the central part of the Dalmatia, the valleys are covered with red soils and sand dunes. Vis and Komize provide excellent accommodations with beautiful views of the crystal blue Adriatic Sea.
Because of the ideal location of Vis it has numerous bays that provide wonderful views of nature that offer peace and enjoyment. The island of Vis appears to be very hard to access either by car, ferry, airplane, train and bus. The travel time varies depending on your choice of transportation. While you can see Vis from the mainland, viewing the island sights such as Srebrna bay, Vis bay and the famous stone houses that line the island of Vis. Tropical weather is customary on the island of Vis with the most popular season being the summer months.

The history of Vis can be seen all around the island dating back to Roman times. The name Vis arrived from the name it was first called Issa and then Lissa. It is said to be in existence for over thirty thousand years. The island is about four miles wide and nine miles long and is about thirty miles from Croatia. The island consists of Cretaceous and Jurassic materials. It is believed that at on time in history the island was maybe connected to the mainland due to skeletal remains of deer found from the Diluvial period.

There are Tumulus grave mounds found about the island of Vis. This was the result of efforts to clear the land for agriculture, but the grave mounds were used for defense and burial purposes. There are fragments from the 3rd century that indicate two Roman burials on the island of Vis. Byzantine Emperor Constantin Porfirogenel was the first to mention and call the island Vis in 950 A.D. In 997 Vis was invaded and the population enslaved by the Venetians. The little villages in the hills were hideouts for some people who escaped and hid out until they would be safe.

The official language of the Croat was Latin until 1847. The alphabets for the are were Roman, Glagolitic and Cyrillic. Today Vis has attractions of historical information for visitors and the tourism crowd is greeted by a staff of English, Croat and German speaking people. The fishing rights in Palagruza were given to Komiza after the treaty was signed ending WWI. They were given sixty years of fishing rights and no more than sixty boats in that period of time. Vis is also known for its wine making within its vineyards which produce eighty thousand barrels of wine a year.
