Croatia Zlarin Island Travel Tourism Guide - Zlarin is a small island in central Dalmatia and it is opposite the town of Sibenik, which is one mile across the Adriatic Sea. It is 8.19 square kilometers and it is in the Sibenik archipelago. The island was often called the golden island, and the green or coral island.

Zlarin has Stone Age and roman finds. The first inhabitants came to the island in the thirteenth century. In the sixteenth century refugees fled to the island from the Ottoman Turks. The former inhabitants were farmers and fishermen but were more commonly referred to as coral divers. The hunting and processing of coral was well known about in the fifteenth century. This lasted until the twentieth century when the success ended and many inhabitants had to emigrate. There are now about 150 residents.

The island has many hidden beaches and ancient monuments. The oldest monument on the island is the Gothic church Our Lady of Raselj, which dates from the fifteenth century. There is a new church built on the site in 1740 and is in the Baroque style, built by Ivan Skoko. Saint Rock’s chapel and Saint Simon’s Chapel were both built in the seventeenth century. Zlarin museum is in the Church of Saint Simon. There are several summer mansions in the town that date from the Baroque period.

There is a boat connection from Sibenik to Zlarin. No cars are allowed on the island.
There is one settlement called Zlarin and the chief occupations of the inhabitants are: tourism, seafaring, farming, viticulture, fishing, olive growing, fruit growing, coral and sponge diving.
There are thick pine forests covering the island and two mountain ridges with a valley of arable fields in between. Zlarin Island has been popular with Sibenik humanists who composed poetry in summer retreats. The local fauna consists of hedgehogs, rabbits and field mice. There are several types of reptiles and amphibians on the island. The highest peak is the Klepac, which is 169 meters high, and Zlarin also has the longest pier of all the islands, which is 127.5 meters long.

Zlarin is well known for its antique jewellery all over the world. There is a coral workshop on the island today where coral is worked with manually and the finished product sold. There is a beautiful female national costume. Mr Ante Maglica who invented maglite torches was born on Zlarin Island and has organized a Foundation to protect the island.
