Croatia Pazin Travel Tourism Guide - Pazin is situated in the centre of the Istrian peninsula. A town of long, rich tradition, it is the administrative seat of Istria, and has the status of a City. The tower that appears on the Pazin coat of arms represents Castle Pazin, and appears inside a shield.

Pazin currently has a population of around 5,300. Surrounded by beautiful natural terrain, consisting of numerous hills and ravines, many tourists visit Pazin to see the untouched landscape, and rich cultural and historical heritage of the town. Pazin market, the biggest traditional Town Fair in Istria, is held every first Tuesday of the month.

Pazin castle is a two-storey fortification, which has an irregular floor plan and an inner ward. The castle as it stands now dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries, as frequent remodeling has altered much of the original castle, which was elongated in form, with a square tower and bulwarks, which surrounded the houses and a Romanesque chapel consecrated to the Madonna.

The parish church of St. Nicholas was built in 1266. Originally a simple Romanesque building with a bell tower, a late gothic sanctuary and net vault were added in 1441. An unknown master, schooled in the Alpine workshops, painted the frescoes that decorate the vault. The oldest existing Pazin coat of arms can also be found here, along with a Latin inscription that confirms the date of construction. The church was consecrated in 1764, in the same year it obtained its present appearance.
One of Croatia’s leading cycling clubs, “Kamen”, trains along the hilly landscape of central Istria, and this has built a tradition for cycling in the area.
There are also many walking and hiking routes around Pazin, all marked with hiking marks and alternative route signs. These routes were arranged by the Pazin hiking society, “Pazinka”, on the 125th anniversary of organized hiking in Pazin and Istria.

There are two small but attractive free climbing areas, equipped by the local free climbing association, “Hyperactive” and the Pazin Tourist Office. There is a natural shelter under the rock here, and fresh water springs where you can bathe in the summer.

Fresh-water fishing is popular in the area, and an annual international fishing competition, “The Winter Cup of Pazin” is held every year at the end of November or beginning of December. Anglers are allowed to fish with 2 rods, but there are restrictions on catches, so check before you fish.

There are many wine and honey producers in the towns surrounding Pazin, and one honey producer, Hrvatin Boris, is situated in the town itself, and sells honey, propolis, honeycomb and honeyed walnuts.

Pazin has two Discos, Kukuriku and Sax, both of which are open until early in the morning at weekends, and a nightclub, Max Magnus, which opens only on Friday and Saturday, and is open until 4 a.m.

Travel to and from Pazin is quite easy. A taxi company, car rental company, train station and bus routes are all situated in the town.
