Croatia Porec Travel Tourism Guide - The two thousand year old town of Porec is arguably the most popular and visited vacation spot on the Istrian Peninsula. Located on the northern shores of the Adriatic sea, this seaport town it is small enough to remain unspoiled, but large enough to have the amenities that the modern traveler is looking for.

With thirty seven miles of beach front, weather is the key to this cities attraction. Mild temperatures, which seldom exceeds 30 Celsius (85 Fahrenheit) even in August. The summer months average more than 10 hours of sunshine per day.

The natural port is further protected from the sea winds by the Island of St. Nicholas (Sveti Nikola), also a popular site for visitors looking for beaches.

The small population or just under 18,000 year round residents, is primarily made up of Croats, with a smattering of Italians, Serbs and Albanians. The city is surrounded on the landward side by fertile fields and picturesque pine woods.

The area is a leader in food processing and organic produce, which includes both grapes and olives. Fine wines are also produced in the area.
Populated since pre-historic times, the first Roman colony was established in 2BC when the settlement known as Castrum was built along the sea. It became known as a city during the reign of first century Roman Emperor Octavium, when it became part of the Roman 'Colonia Iulia Parentium'.
By the fifth century AD, a Basilica had been built here, the result of nearly two hundred years of Christian influences in the area.

After the collapse of the Roman Empire in 476. the city soon came under the control of the Ostrogoths, and later, part of the Byzantine Empire.
